PLAY BY: Astrid Bergès-Frisbey
name: Princess Attina (Ava Marie Edwards) age: Twenty-seven (twenty-five when the curse hit) birthdate: May 19 kingdom of birth: Atlantica species: Mermaid occupation: (Crown princess of Atlantica) Owner of C'Est La Vie Boutique affiliation: Good sexual orientation: Heterosexual powers: Can remove, carry, and use her father's trident
height/weight/body: Standing at merely five foot four, Attina is one of the shortest in her family in human form. When in her mermaid form, however, her tail is long and proud. Her length is one of the only things she misses when in her human form. She is slender in both forms, with a toned build. There is a pride within her bones that allows her grace and elegance in her movements, something she's sure was instilled in her though her birthright and royal upbringing. Her hands are long and nimble, something that is useful when she plays her harp.
hair: Attina's hair is usually left down in gentle waves falling at about her breast. It's auburn brown color distinguishes her from most of her sisters. For the most part, Attina doesn't bother with her hair, putting it into a messy updo or letting it do as it pleases. When put up, her hair is much longer than it seems, especially in her mermaid form. In her mermaid form, her hair is even longer than when in her human form.
eyes: Attina's eyes are mostly a light green, with specks of cerulean blue and soft gold with hints of amber deep inside of them. Her eyes are wide, much like that of an innocent child, in an almond shape that brings them into focus when you look at her face. In comparison to her otherwise serious expression, her eyes are bright. With eyes like Attina's, there is no hiding emotion. If you look into her face, you will see how she feels. This is not a trait Attina approves of having, but it's one others seem to enjoy about her.
distinguishing features: When in human form, Attina has a small scar beside her left hip bone, very similar to the place her tail would start in her mermaid form. She assumes this is because of a cut she received to her tail while being caught in a pirate's net. As she was pulled up, a sharp scale somehow within one of the nets from prior use cut her deeply on her side. Besides that, her skin is remarkably smooth and pale. The only piercings she allowed herself when under the curse was that of a single hole on each ear.
style: Attina has a remarkable sense of style, hence why her shop does so well. Even when she dresses down, she manages to look like a model. For the most part, she has never preferred to wear makeup. After the curse broke, she supposed that was due to her mermaid roots. Black is a staple shade in her closet, a lot of accessories and shoes being of this color as well. Another staple of her closet are a variety of dresses. This is mostly because she can't stand the feel of her legs being trapped. This too, she supposes, is due to her being a mermaid.
Attina was known all over Atlantica as the most responsible of all of King Triton's daughters. She was the one who was known for respecting the rules, studying the history of the sea, and lecturing people for littering in the reefs. Attina was raised to be able to handle the pressure and responsibilities of running an entire kingdom, and that training never went to waste. She learned well from her father how to be a good leader, and responsibility was a key factor in that.
Being the oldest of seven daughters, she was often taking care of her sisters, or at least trying to. She blamed herself for their mother's death and because of this she seemed to try to step into that role for the other girls. She tried her best to make sure her sisters knew that they could talk to her, that she would keep their secrets, keep them safe, and give them the best advice she could. She was often caught singing Athena's song to her sisters as a lullaby when they were little.
Attina wasn't the type of girl that was either book smart or street smart. She had the ability to be both. Attina could study quickly, memorizing things almost instantly, and was always a visual learner. She had the ability to read a book on a subject and remember almost every fact within it. However, she could also barter, persuade, and had a knack for being able to get out of bad situations.
Attina is not the type to be told she can't do something. Attina will never admit when she's wrong, even if she realizes she is. She gets a small thrill out of a good debate with others and this can often get her into trouble. Though she likes to give advice, she doesn't take any very well. She likes to do as she thinks is best, thinking often that her way will be best, though this is not the case.
This is not something Attina means to be, it just happens. A side effect of having a strong maternal instinct is that she often comes off as bossy to her family. In Atlantica, she was the one who would complain about her sisters' messes. She would nag them about not studying. She would often tell them what to do, thinking she was doing a good thing. This, however, turned out to be her weakness. Though she always means well, she doesn't have a very good way of going about it. She often comes across as trying to boss people around instead of trying to help them, as she thinks she's doing.
Attina's often seen as a little too serious. She always has the weight of a full kingdom on her shoulders, and that's a lot of pressure for a young girl. Especially now, at her age, still unmarried. Her father has a lot of expectations for his oldest daughter, and living up to those means the world to her. It's because of this that she sometimes misses humor and is seen as a bit stiff, though she can loosen up when it comes to a certain sea caption.
Attina, being the crown princess of Atlantica, is used to there being a place for everything and everything being in it's place. She's known for being clean and knowing where everything goes, especially in her own spaces. Attina was one of those girls who could tell with a single glance exactly which item one of her sisters had "borrowed" from her closet. She liked having structure in her life, and keeping everything organized was a good way of having that.
Ariel wasn't the only sister who often got tired of all of the rules they had to follow. Attina was the good girl, the one her father expected the most from as the heir. This sometimes came to feel like a noose around her neck. One of the reasons Attina came to know all of the rules so well was so that she knew how to break them without getting into trouble or actually breaking them. This entirely aggravated King Triton, but even he couldn't fight it.
Attina's home will always be the ocean. She loves the sea, her shop being near the beach so that she could often visit. Late at night when the sea was the highest was her favorite time. Seeing the moon as high in the sky and reflected off of the water she loved was almost magical. The sea stretching that much further onto the earth was even more fascinating.
One thing Attina cannot stand is not understanding something. There's a small hint of fear in the unknown which makes Attina want to know a little about everything. Being as smart as she is, being confused makes her angry. She feels like she's letting herself down, and she hates that feeling.
Attina prides herself on her honesty. In her eyes, anyone who lies to her should never again be trusted. The way she sees it, her being forever honest gives no one the right to lie to her. She doesn't think anyone needs to. She tries to be open-minded and hear everyone out, trying to see things from different perspectives. Lying, to her, simply means someone is untrustworthy or hiding something, and she doesn't like either of these traits.
This has only been a problem since she last saw Captain Hook. When she started feeling things for him, she fought it. She didn't want to care so deeply, especially not for a pirate, even more so not for one who was planning on selling her to the highest bidder. Over time, as the two grew closer, she realized she'd never felt the way she felt for him for anyone else. When he told her to leave, gave her her tail back after kissing her under the stars and making her love him, it was like a stab straight through her heart. Leaving, the loneliness of not being near him was almost as cold as the arctic waters. It was not a feeling she ever wanted to feel again.
icing on the cake .
worst fear: Attina's biggest fear is letting down her father. Being the crowned princess and heir to the throne is a big responsibility, one that she had always taken very seriously. The very thought of letting her father down upset her. She wanted more than anything to be the daughter that he always wanted and expected her to be.
deepest secret: Attina's deepest, darkest secret is that she still blames herself for her mother's death. If Attina hadn't gotten her tail stuck between those rocks, her mother would have had more time to save the music box and herself. Attina would never have gotten crushed to death by the pirate ship. Attina used to swim to the cove where her mother was killed and play her harp in her honor. She never dared go near the rocks that had trapped her. It hurt too much to remember the guilt.
deepest desire: Attina's wishes mostly for more time with Captain Hook, though she knows she shouldn't. Her family knows that when she disappeared, she had been caught in a net, but she didn't tell them who had caught her or what had happened during that time. Killian had even kissed her once, but she couldn't let her family know that. He was a pirate, a human, and her father would be outraged to think of his heir with the same type of people who had killed his wife. She couldn't help wanting to be around him, though. There was something in the way he had kissed her that made her yearn for seeing him again. Even when he set her free, she thought he was doing it to save her, though she always wondered what he could be attempting to save her from. Even after all these years, she wanted to explore the feeling he had given her, though it was something that always frightened her entirely.
special skills: Attina is very skilled at the harp and most other stringed instruments. She's also clever with styling, which she uses to find what colors, looks, and styles would look best on a client to her shop through a mixture or the person's personality, body type, and other key factors of who they are and how they look. She also has an eye for a great book, often seen in the Storybrooke library.
overall personality .
Attina is the eldest of Triton's daughters, and it very much so shows. She became like a mother to everyone else following her mother's death and feels responsible for their safety and wellbeing. She cares very much for her younger sisters and wants everyone to get along, though she sometimes goes about showing this in the wrong way. Attina is the most likely one to agree with their father and his rules, and as the eldest of his daughters he trusts her to keep the other girls in line. She can come off as rather bossy at times, but she always has their best interests at heart. She takes her role as future Queen of Atlantica very seriously and is very dedicated to keeping the history and traditions alive. At times, she acts as the spokeswoman for her sisters, trying to smooth things over with their father when they get into trouble. Knowing her father, she attempts to keep him calm so as not to let his anger outrule his judgment as it has several times in the past.
Attina was a curious girl, always wanting to know about the world throughout the entire ocean as well as above their home. She would go to the surface often, watch the humans, study them. While Ariel did this out of adoration, Attina did it to learn. She was always studious, always wanting to know everything. Her curiosity could get her into a lot of trouble, but she was intelligent enough to find the loopholes in her father's rules, often leading to him changing them before the time when Ariel would start breaking them.
Attina was responsible, fair, and patient. She tried to stay open-minded and able to see things from all types of different perspectives. She stayed Triton's darling daughter while remaining true to herself. Despite the weight on her shoulders, she managed to never let go of who she was inside. Even during the curse, Attina kept her orange five point tiara close by, hidden in a safe box in her apartment. She never wore it, and she nevr knew why she had it, but she knew it was a family heirloom even when she didn't know who was her family.
Love was always very important to Attina. Her father hoped she would marry someone of his choosing, but she had managed to negotiate with him that she would get to choose who she led her kingdom with. If she fell in love with a prince, fine, but if not she would be allowed to keep her love and run her kingdom. She managed this by using her father's trust in her against him. No matter what, she did her duty, and her father knew that he could trust that she always would. He knew that if at any point she felt the could no longer manage this, she would pass the responsibility on to her sister Alana respectfully. She would help to train her. She would make sure that their kingdom was safe.
Attina always kept her promises, did her best to always tell the truth, and she tried to only ever do what she though was the right thing. Overall, she was a good person, and she did her best at everything she attempted in her life.

King Triton and Queen Athena had their first born daughter in the middle of high tide during an awful storm. The sea churned with the girl's first wails, the waves crashing against the shore until the baby was calmed. Queen Athena wanted to raise Attina to be a great ruler. She wanted Attina to grow up to have a great sense of responsibility and be the same level of patient, fair, understanding, and compassionate as Athena herself had learned to be. She wanted Attina to care for those in need, the way a great ruler should.
When Athena and Triton first found they were pregnant with their first child, all of the responsibilities of the eldest born fell to Attina even before she could come into the world. They both knew the great weight they would have to put on their first, regardless of gender, and Attina took that with great pride through her childhood and possibly even more so into her teen and early adult years. Six little princesses came after Attina, and Attina took great pride in being an older sister. Six years older than the youngest, Ariel, she was the one who tried the most to help her Mother with the others. She tried to be there, to feed them and hold them and make sure they were all okay. She was the one who jumped in to fix things during her sister's fights, the one who offered a shoulder to cry on when something went wrong in their lives, the one who always had advice to give. She often found herself standing between her father and her sisters, speaking for them to get them out of trouble.
When Attina was still young, only a few years past the age of six, Athena was killed. During a family celebration, a pirate ship came crashing into the cove where the family was. Athena had to save Attina, who had gotten her tailed trapped through curiosity between two rocks. Because of this, when Athena tried to also save the music box she had received as an anniversary present that day from Triton, she was crushed by the ship, which also sunk. Attina blamed herself for the death, and held it against herself for years on end. If she had just listened to her father and swam away at the first sight of the ship, she never would have ended up trapped beneath that rock in the first place. Her mother would've had time to save the music box. Attina felt that she owed it to her mother to be the person she had wanted her to become. She took the job of acting as a mother for her younger siblings over instantly. She hid her pain by helping them with theirs. She locked her pain away thinking this could help her deal with it.
Attina started taking her lessons very seriously, growing into a serious little girl. The only thing that really let her feel close to her mother again was going to the cove where she had died and playing her harp along to her mother's song, singing the words lowly where her father couldn't possibly hear her. Her father banished music from their land, too in pain to think of Athena at all. She and all of her siblings rebelled and, eventually, it was allowed back. Attina would sing the song with her siblings, sing it to them when they went to bed, and sneak to the cove to sing it some more. She grieved through her harp, practicing often and becoming quite skilled with stringed instruments because of it.
Attina, having learned from her mother to always be open-minded and view things from other people's perspectives much unlike her father, would watch the ships pass by without the hatred her father felt for the humans. Attina never blamed the humans for taking her mother, as she blamed herself. She would stop singing when she saw them, not wanting them to come near. A few times, she let herself be curious and swam out to them, seeing the varying sizes of ship, type of lumber used to create them, the different flags and accents of each. She was always home before anyone could notice she had even gone.
It was on one of these times, her curiosity getting the better of her, that Attina was spotted. She had come up to the surface to see the flags when her eyes locked with the captain of the ship's. One quick glance and she knew to run. The ship was that of a pirate's. Attina was smart, quick, and usually had a sharp rock with her to cut her way out in case she got trapped by a net. This time, however, when the net was cast out, she was cut. In her pain, she dropped her weapon, and she was caught. She held her wound, but she didn't cry. She wouldn't give the men the pleasure. She was brought aboard the ship and the man she had met eyes with ordered her placed below deck.
Somehow, the captain had a potion. He used it on her, and she lost her tail. It felt like she was losing a part of herself the first time she noticed, staring down at the strange new limbs in horror. After that, days passed on the ship before she saw the man again. She took to humming her mother's song for comfort. Once again, she was blaming herself. If she had heeded her father's warning about the horrible creatures humans were, she wouldn't have been here. She wouldn't have been forced away from her family who needed her. Everything she had ever wanted to deny about humans became embodied in this man. Still, she remembered everything her mother had talked to her about. She was supposed to be fair. She was supposed to be kind. She was supposed to be good.
She tried to look at the man with an open mind, and she found him intriguing. He was beautiful, with eyes that Attina wanted to stare into. He had an air of mystery about him that made Attina want to know more. He was intelligant and charming, things she admired in people, but his nature was that of a villain. Attina hoped the best for him, hoping he could change. That was, after all, how she was raised. She tried to see the best in everyone. She could not condemn him without knowing why he had done such things.
He gave her clothes to wear, that of a pirate. They didn't fit terribly well, but he helped her rig them to stay on. She thanked him, as she should, for his kindness in helping her keep her modesty. For two weeks, he came down with sustenance or clean clothing when it was needed. They didn't talk much, with the exception of him telling her how much he was going to get through selling her. Through it all, Attina kept her composure. She was trained well by her mother. She was headstrong, and she was not going to be broken.
Finally though, he came down again to feed her and her curiosity got the best of her once more. She asked for his name. He answered with a laugh and left again, but he at least answered. Attina took that as a sign of hope. Each night when he would return, she would ask another question. He answered with a sense of wit and humor and charm that Attina had never known, and she grew fond of it. He started asking questions of his own, and she would answer honestly without risking any danger for any others of her kind.
As time went on between the two of them, she still hadn't been sold. She was permitted to walk the upper deck with the crew, and grew fond of the men above. They were kind to her, respectful. No harm was done to her by the men like she had been warned by her father there would be. The captain kept claiming he hadn't yet received the right offer, but with time Attina began to doubt his claims. She sensed he was growing fond of her much the same as she was him.
She found that she and the pirates had a lot in common. The life of a pirate wasn't all carefree. Storms could ruin their entire lives, rocks could leave them to die. The changing of seasons came, and Attina grew worried about her family. She knew that with changing seasons meant her father would be frantic. Too much time had gone on. Someone would again have to pay for her mistakes. Yet, somehow, when she looked at the captain, she couldn't just escape. She grew sad, but also happy. She missed home, but adored the company of the man. Every time she would look at him, she felt this rush in her head and chest that she had never known. She didn't dare call it love, but she had no other word for her feelings.
Nearly a year passed since she had first been captured. One starry night, she and the captain were standing on the deck and he was teaching her how to navigate through the stars. Attina, who had always loved to learn, was fascinated. She learned about constellations and how the ships used the to guide themselves during the night. He told her the stories behind the stars, and she soaked up the information. She remembered everything. She was so absorbed by the lesson that when the ship was rocked by a wave and the astrolabe he was using to teach her fell onto the deck, she leapt to grab it. The pair stood up, their fingertips just barely touching, each having grabbed the precious object. The feeling of his skin against hers made her heart race, even if only the slightest of touches.
She was closer to him than she had ever been, closer to him than she had ever been to any man even. Looking into his eyes, she knew she was blushing, she knew he would be able to see the longing beneath her eyes, now wide as she stared up at him. It was like slow motion that she couldn't stop as he bent down and put his lips against hers. The kiss was so gentle and long lasting, Attina had never known anything like the electric feel between them during it. She gave into the feeling, kissing him back softly, with no hesitance. It was warm, kind, and everything she had once hoped he would prove to be. That was the moment she realized she had fallen for the man. He broke away and Attina couldn't even try to hide the smile on her face. They didn't speak again, going their separate ways to bed, but Attina stayed up that night, relishing the feel of his lips against hers.
Attina, however, would soon realize that happily ever afters were messy and never came with a guarantee. The next morning, the man woke her with a darkness about him that she had never seen. The man she had kissed the night before was gone, replaced with a villainous broken man who no longer believed in love. He ordered her up to the upper decks and made her drink a potion once more. She was scared, and she obliged. She felt the pain of transformation again. Her tail was back, the soft orange color that had once been her favorite color, and she was terribly confused and hurt.
The captain started saying terribly mean things. He told her he couldn't find anyone interested in buying a mermaid and that she wasn't worth the price of upkeep. He told her to leave, told to her to go home where she belonged. Attina was hurt, but she was still the same headstrong princess she had always been. She deserved more than what he was doing. She refused him, metting his cold glare with a fiery one of her own. She venomously told him that he was making a mistake. She confessed to loving him. That confession, however, made everything worse. His eyes grew colder, and he drew his sword at her. Attina shook her head, looking at him only a moment more before diving over the edge of the ship and not looking back. Her heart was broken, full of pain and confusion, and all she had were the memories of what had gone on between them.
When she arrived home, her entire family was overjoyed. She didn't tell her father of what had conspired between herself and the captain. She told him she had been captured, injured, locked away for months, and given legs through magic. She told him that she was the one who got the potion to turn her back into her rightful form and that she had escaped with her life. She didn't tell the truth, but she didn't lie. She just left Captain Hook out of it. Her father still trusted her, happy she was home, and she was once again left in the exact same predicament as she had been.
She no longer went to the cove, no longer watched the ships come by. It hurt too much to think of the man she had loved. In the time she had been gone, her kingdom had grown by quite a bit and she soon had suitors coming to meet her often. On the insistance of her father, she went on a few dates, but she found none of them made her feel the way the captain had. She once again mended her pain by throwing herself into her responsibilities and helping her family. She found that even that didn't help the pain of the hole in her chest. She put on a happy front for her family but sat at her window late at night thinking of the man who had turned on her.
When the curse hit, Attina wasn't even frightened for herself. She worried for her family, but that was all. Whatever was to come could be no worse than the pain her love had caused her. She was wiped of all memory and transported to a world without magic, a world where she had legs again as if she always had. Ava Marie Edwards was created, given the history of being an only child. Her parents had died in a car accident when she was a teenager and she inherited her mother's shop, a vintage fashion boutique near the beach with an apartment conveniently above it. Storybrooke, Maine was her home, and with the curse it became all she knew. Nothing remained of the life before except a love for the ocean, a serious dislike of seafood, and dreams of sailing the seas on a pirate ship with a pirate she could never quite clearly make out. She would wake up just before his face would be shown, or only view it as if through water, a blur about it that made the man impossible to identify.
She was once again separated from her family, the people she had only recently been able to reunite with. She spent her days playing string instruments, running her family's shop, helping others with outfits for their hot dates, only very rarely ever having one of her own. She would stare out at the stars at night, somehow knowing every constellation, and would yearn for something she didn't even know. She never quite felt complete, but she shrugged it off as age as she played with the necklace she always wore out of nervous habit. There was no way to know that the little trinket she'd never had the thought to remove was what was keeping her in her rightful form. There was no way to know that it was one of the many made solely for the children of King Triton, mimicked many a time but an heirloom she was somehow gifted that kept her close to her family even when so far away.
When the curse was broken, all of her memories flooded back to her, as well as the pain. She had passed him in her Storybrooke life, she thought. She had seen her sisters too. She worked endlessly to track down her family, her love. While searching, she learned of the love he had lost before her, and she felt sympathy for his pain. She tried to rationalize what he had done to her because of it, but she still couldn’t fully forgive him for what he did to her. She couldn't imagine wanting to give this pain to someone else. She had thought that he could love her, but felt that she had to be wrong after everything he had done. To him she could never have been anything more than a commodity that wouldn’t sell, she rationalized. Somehow, it hurt even more to think that. She still felt in the pit of her stomach that she had to be wrong. She was raised to think the best of people, to be optimistic, to hope. It was that hope that still left her wanting to see the man. Somewhere in the back of her mind she could still see the way he looked at her that night under the stars.
The biggest problem for Attina through the spell breaking was her disappointment in herself. She didn't remember her family, but she did remember the pirate who had kidnapped her and broke her heart. Even when the curse broke, she was upset about how much she actually enjoyed her life under the curse. No pressure to take care of anyone other than herself, just a store to run and the occasional town meeting to go to. Even when she didn't know who she was, the only thing she could remember was the captain, and she hated it. She felt ashamed of herself, not knowing her family, not remembering her friends. When the curse broke, Attina's heart broke a little more. Another thing to blame herself for.
Through everything, Attina had grown up quite a bit. She still stays true to herself and the person she aims to be for her deceased mother. She still stays as patient and kind and fair as she ever had been. However, she starts to hate that she dreamt of Killian even when she didn't remember who she was, thinking that he never loved her. She once again blames herself for it. As time went on, her rationalizing diminished her hope. Deep down inside her, she would always love the pirate who had stolen her heart and tail away from her. Deep down inside, she would always hope that he would love her as well. However, that had to be put aside. Attina focused on finding her family and a way to give them their tails again. After all, she was the crowned princess. She had to protect and lead her family. Her pain was secondary to her duty.
