Face Claim: Robert Carlyle
Character Name: Rumplestiltskin / Rumen Gold
Character Age: around 300 (looks to be in his early 50's)
Occupation: The Dark One in Enchanted Forest, pawnshop owner and lawyer in Storybrooke
Kingdom of Birth: Amare
Family: Malcolm (Peter Pan)-father, Baelfire-son
Likes: magic, deals, Baelfire, Belle, Regina (as complicated as their relationship is), Jefferson, spinning
Dislikes: deal breakers, anyone who hurts those few he loves, Peter Pan, being powerless, bad fathers, alcohol
Strengths: extremely powerful sorcerer, effectively immortal, has a good 300 years of knowledge, excellent judge of character
Weaknesses: volatile, distrusting, a strong thirst for vengeance that can blindside him, anyone who holds his dagger can control him
Personality: Rumple is cunning and manipulative. He knows what people desire and how to use their wishes to benefit him. He’s a smooth talker and can persuade anyone just about anything. He’s addicted to making deals and using magic. Magic has become a crutch. Rather than deal with things on an emotional level he’d rather change them to suit his purposes or his fancy. Although he is slowly trying to change this habit thanks to the positive influence of Belle. He values self preservation above pretty much anything. There are very few that can make him question this desire. Belle and his son are two such people. More than anything Rumple regrets not being a proper father to his son. So he lashes out at other people who he feels are terrible parents in a vain attempt to lesson his guilt. He wants a child of his own so he can have another go at parenthood, get it right this time. It doesn’t matter if the baby is his or belongs to someone else.
He’s dangerous not only because he is one of the world’s most powerful sorcerers but because he is so volatile. He can be perfectly calm and cheery one moment and then snap and threaten someone. There is a rhyme and reason to what Rumple does but few can see it. He tends to be 12 steps ahead of everyone else, manipulating everything behind the scenes. He believes perception is power. So although he rather enjoys theatrics and being the center of attention he can be quite subtle, leading people to conclusions they’d never anticipate or dream of on their own. Rumple is continuously consumed by thoughts of revenge. If someone has harmed him or someone he cares about either physically or emotionally, he cannot simply let it go. They must pay for trifling with him. He realizes revenge will not make him any happier but he still has the vindictive drive to punish.
There’s more to Rumple than meets the eye. He can be much kinder than he appears. But he has a rejection complex given his history and so he tends to push people away rather than trust them, let them in. After all these years, he can still lack the courage either to risk his life or be honest. But now he can at least acknowledge that he’s a coward more openly at least to Belle. He loathes being called that though or voicing it himself. He desperately wants to change that aspect of himself. That was why he never magically healed his leg. He wished to remind himself that he was a coward. He was someone who ran away. He chose to flee rather than fight.
No matter what vile things Regina’s done to him or he’s done to her, he always views her as a pupil with incredible potential and a daughter figure given the loss of his son and the relationship he had with Cora although he would never admit this and rarely allows himself to think it. He was the one to corrupt Regina but he also taught her what he believed to be very important lessons. And in the end he does want her to be happy. If she can’t find her happy end, he believes he does not stand a chance. Rumple wonders if Cora had actually stayed with him if he wouldn’t have given up his quest for Balefire and been happy with a new family. But now he hopes he can make a new family with Belle and make things up with Bae.
History: Once upon a time Rumple married a woman named Milah and was incredibly happy. But stories would go nowhere without conflict. So the conflict of this story involved a great war against the ogres known simply enough as the Ogre War. He went off to fight like a proper hero but his motivation to do the noble thing and not be a coward like his father was destroyed when a seer told him that Milah was to have a son and that Rumple’s actions on the battlefield would leave him fatherless. Wishing to return home and be a proper father to his son, he struck himself with a mallet so the soldiers would have no use for him. He returned home to find that his son was already born. Milah was furious at him for having injured himself instead of fighting. As Balefire, their son, grew older she disappeared more and more, spending most of her time in one tavern or another. Eventually Rumple was told that pirates had taken Milah. He went to confront Killian Jones but he refused to give Milah back unless Rumple bested him in a duel. He went home without fighting.
Rumple raised Balefire on his own for a while. But children were being used for the Ogre Wars. As soon as someone turned 14 they could be recruited. Rumple tried to run away with his son not being able to bare being separated from him. But he was caught and sent back home. Then a man spoke of a way Rumple could get power to protect his son. Rumple stabbed the current dark one with his dagger, gaining his powers. Rumple put an end to the fighting with his magic, saving hundreds of children. But all magic came with a price. His darker urges were enhanced. He started hurting everyone over the slightest thing. Bae felt distant from his father and made a deal with him. If he found a way to get rid of Rumple’s magic without killing him Rumple would do whatever was necessary to lose his magic. Bae got a magic bean to take them to a new land. But in the end Rumple couldn’t follow Balefire. In a moment of cowardice, he let his son fall while he remained behind. He felt terrible afterwards and wanted to take it back but it was too late. Later he ran into the same seer who set everything into motion. He demanded details about whether he’d see his son again. She offered her power to him and he took it, draining her life. But the power turned out to be more of a curse than anything. He couldn’t sort out the pieces. It was all a jumble. But he was told he would see Balefire again. A curse would bring him to the world but he would not be the one to cast it.
Regina would be the one to cast the curse. When she summoned him he eagerly trained her , waiting for the day she would cast it. He didn’t sit back doing nothing while he waited for Regina to mature. He offered deals to all manner of people, people who never seemed to understand just what his price truly was. One of these deals involved saving a town from ogres. In return for saving their town he demanded the princess come with him to clean the dark castle. Over time Rumple found himself falling in love Belle despite his best intentions. He knew no one would be capable of ever loving him. His own father had abandoned him. His first wife had run away with Captain Hook. (When he discovered the truth he ripped out Milah’s heart while he watched.) Cora, Regina’s mother, someone he truly loved had chosen to rip out her own heart to stay with the prince instead of him. How could he believe anyone would love him? So when Belle kissed him he pushed her away pretending power was more important. But really, he was terrified of her rejecting him. He sent Belle away. Later Regina abducted her and lied to Rumple, saying she’d died. In a deep depression, Rumple secluded himself further. He destroyed his dinning hall, sparing only the chipped cup Belle had dropped. It was the only thing he really cherished.
Finally after some manipulation on Rumple’s end, Regina casts the curse. For 28 years Rumple forgot who he truly was. But he had a safety mechanism put in place. He’d asked for the name of Snow’s child for two reasons. One was her name was the trigger to bring back his memories. When she came to Storybrooke and Granny called out her name, Rumple recalled who he was. He then placed little nudges here and there to make sure Emma would believe and break the curse. Right before Emma broke the curse and Rumple managed to grab the bottle of true love Belle stumbled into his shop saying how Regina locked her away. He was angry as everything but still intent on his purpose. He needed to bring magic back to Storybrooke. On the way to the well that returned lost things the curse broke and Belle remembered who she was. Rumple dropped the bottle into the well and magic came back. Belle made him promise not to kill Regina so they could be together. So he summoned a wraith to suck out her soul. Belle found out what he’d done and was hurt and upset. But as the wraith didn’t manage to suck out Regina’s soul and Rumple felt terrible about breaking Belle’s trust, she stayed with him even though he told her she should leave because he was a monster. She assured him that was why she had to stay. She wanted to help him change.
Rumple charmed Balefire’s clothes so that he could remember who he was when he crossed the town line instead of reverting to his cursed self. He didn’t have enough after testing the potion to bring Belle with her. When she was saying goodbye Hook shot her, making her fall over the line. She forgot who he was. He brought Belle to the hospital and did everything he could to try and get her to remember him but nothing seemed to work. Giving up on Belle for the moment, he went to New York to find his son with Emma and Henry. Rumple finds out that Henry is actually his grandson. But Bae doesn’t want anything to do with Rumple. He only returns to spend time with Henry Regina tricks Belle into thinking she was a barfly named Lacey. Rumple went to Charming for advice as to how to make Belle fall for him again. She was completely different and was now more attracted to his dark side. Bae's girlfriend and a man who had found his way into Storybrooke teamed up to try to destroy the town with the help of one of Regina’s artifacts. Rumple was convinced they were all going to die. But the Blue Fairy managed to concoct something to restore memories. Rumple gave it to Belle so she could support him and be with him in the end. Emma and Regina managed to use magic to save the town.
Henry was kidnaped and taken to Neverland. Rumple was determined to get him back even though there had been a prophecy that Henry would be his doom. He believed Tamara had killed his son and so he at least wanted to save his grandson.
Rumple accompanied Regina, Emma, Snow, Charming, and Hook to Neverland. But he promptly split off from the group, believing none of the more optimistic members of the crew had what it took to get Henry back. Emma didn’t believe in herself, her family, or anything. Snow and Charming as usual were clueless. And Regina stayed with them not following him. Rumple was determined to face Peter Pan, the father who had abandoned him, on his own. When he came face to face with him he tried to trap him in Pandora’s box which he’d gotten with Regina’s help thanks to a mermaid named Ariel. Unfortunately Peter Pan had actually switched bodies with Henry. Everyone grew suspicious of ‘Henry’ over time. They contemplated the possibility that bodies had been switched. They placed Pandora’s Box on the other side of the town line for insurance. Rumple used his magic to switch Pan and Henry back. Rumple then tried to kill his father. Rumple was overcome by Pan’s power. But then he threatened to kill both Belle and Balefire who he’d found in Neverland. Rumple stabbed Peter Pan and himself to save everyone.
The next thing he remembered he woke up in snow in front of Balefire and Belle. It wasn’t a happy reunion. The Wicked Witch had his dagger and commanded him to kill both Belle and Balefire. Balefire had cast a spell for him and Rumple to trade places so he was dying. Rumple forced part of Bae’s mind into his own to save him, driving Rumple mad. But Bae couldn’t stay inside him forever. And he died. Rumple spent the next several weeks as a slave to Zelena, doing her bidding. But eventually Regina managed to defeat her using white magic. Rumple was free. Regina gave Belle Rumple’s dagger which she tried to give back to him. But he let her think she had it so he could take care of Zelena without suspicion. He then killed Zelena for manipulating his son into dying and using him like a puppet. But killing her enacted the magic to travel back in time. Fortunately his past self managed to make sure Emma and Hook didn’t cause too drastic a change. Back in the present Rumple married Belle and he switched the daggers back so she had his real one. After the Zelena unpleasantness was done he asked her for his dagger back, not feeling comfortable with anyone holding that sway over him; and, being confident she would hand it to him without hesitation.
Sample Post: What in the world was Rumple going to tell his son?! Everything had all fallen apart in a matter of moments. He’d hoped if he came pleading to the pirate, explained how Milah had a family, a loving husband and son...He’d let her go. The last thing he wanted for Bae was a broken family. That was why he’d injured himself, fled the battlefield all those years ago. He just...couldn’t put his precious son through living without a father. He knew how difficult that was, the painful sting of abandonment. Without a father, Bae would always feel lonely and would always wonder why he couldn’t have what so many other boys did, a papa to tell him stories and to listen to his troubles and soothe his worries, someone to love him and care about his day, watch him grow.
He should have known things wouldn’t end well. When had fate ever been kind to Rumple? His father had been the village coward; and, he’d abandoned Rumple the second it was convenient never mind that all Rumple wanted was to be with him. Never mind that he’d given him something so precious and so rare all in the hopes that they could start over again somewhere new. No, Rumple simply wasn’t important to him. He’d abandoned him twice. Rumple had been a terribly slow learner, not accepting the truth of his father's feelings towards him the first time.
And here...when Rumple thought he had finally found happiness with Milah...the Ogre War had to come and wreck all of that, drag him away. And still, he’d been cheerful. He was so willing to prove that he wasn’t the coward his father was. But things had, as they so often did for him, gone terribly wrong. There’d been a little seer who warned him, said his actions on the battlefield would leave his son fatherless. Milah was pregnant! When he heard that....He couldn’t risk his life fighting a losing war. He had to come home to his family! And Milah hated him for it. He saw that look in her eyes, the way she stared as though Rumple were a rather appalling insect that needed to be squashed or at least avoided. The only love she held was for the son they shared. But that didn’t matter to Rumple because he still loved her. And he was convinced in time the feeling would be mutual. If he kept working, kept trying to make her happy, she’d remember what she’d once seen in him. She'd see that the man she'd initially fallen in love with still existed. Rumple wasn’t a bad man. It wasn’t wrong to want to be with his family.
Only now...It was ruined. He could never make Milah happy because she’d been stolen away from him. He should have listened when she said they should move; but, he’d been scared. They had a life established in this town. If they should pack up their things and leave all of a sudden....They’d have nothing. And Rumple knew better than most how cruel destiny was. There was no guarantee Rumple could find work somewhere else. It was...better to stay here. Only..it wasn’t because now his beloved Mila was gone forever. He would never forgive that nasty pirate Hook for abducting his wife, Bae’s mother! How..How could he begin to explain to his son what had happened?
Should he tell him the truth, that Hook had offered him a chance to fight and he refused? But...rumple was a Shepard and a spinster. He didn’t even know how to properly hold a sword! If he accepted the challenge, Bae would only lose a father on top of a mother. Would he understand if he explained or would he hate him too? No! Rumple couldn’t handle that! Bae was the only person in the entire world that loved Rumple, the only one who showered him with genuine warmth and affection. Rumple’s life wasn’t easy, being on the brink of poverty; but, Bae made it tolerable and even enjoyable at moments. Without Bae’s love, Rumple would have nothing. There would be no point in even living anymore. Bae was everything to him. So...How could he possibly tell him the truth? If even Bae called him a coward...
He finally managed to amble his way home, leaning on his walking stick for support. His leg still troubled but now the leg was the least of his issues. Bae...Bae was waiting for Rumple and his mother; but, only one had returned. He hobbled inside just in time to hear Bae call out to him. He sounded so frightened! Did he have another nightmare? Rumple rushed to Bae’s side as quickly as he could given his condition. He wanted nothing more to scoop Bae up in his arms and tell him everything would be alright but...It wasn’t. So...rather than hug him, Rumple stared down at his precious son, the deepest pain and misery reflected in his eyes. “Bae...I’m...I’m sorry. I’m so, so sorry. I...” His eyes watered and his voice cracked; and, he found it impossible to continue. Here his son stood so full of hope and...Rumple was the one who needed to crush his dreams, tell him that Milah was never coming home again.
