PLAY BY: Sebastian Stan
name: Jefferson Hatter age: 28 birthdate: April, 21st, 1955 kingdom of birth: Amare species: gifted human occupation: (Thief-for-hire/Portal jumper/Mushroom seller ) Millionare who runs imports into Storybrooke affiliation: neutral sexual orientation: Bisexual powers: Short range teleportation in worlds as long as he's been to a place which is combined with a necessary spatial sense secondary ability so he doesn't teleport into a fireball, long range world travel via magic hat, creation of magic hats as well as the ability to speak to them and sensing of magic.
height/weight/body: Jefferson is 5'11, a fairly comfortably tall height, which he can make taller with heels. His weight is very slight with very speed based muscles. His body looks like it's average, someone who doesn't really work out much in Storybrooke average, but in reality is an odd mix of frail and strong from attempts to recover from poisoning in his youth as well as from Wonderland.
hair: Jefferson's hair is kept very short by preference, the only time longer being when he was raising his daughter as a mushroom seller, with whether he uses gel on it dependent on his sate that day. It's quite straight and a dark brown influenced very little by any sort of hair styling product. While his hair was dirtier in the Enchanted forest, Jefferson's hair is kept quite clean.
eyes: Jefferson's eyes are a very clear blue that get wrinkles when he gives a nervous smile. They become very noticeably blue when he is scared or in a panic while they look dark enough to be brown when he's closed off or being the bad guy. If he's working on hats, or trying to read, he wears fairly thick glasses but doesn't wear them outside of that.
distinguishing features: Under his scarf, Jefferson has a neck scar that comes from interaction with the queen of hearts. He also has quite a few other scars from his time working as a hatter or his various adventures. Due to his work, he is also more build for speed rather than strength, so he is rather slender and frail.
style: If Jefferson has one vice, it would be clothing. He's always dressed in a formal style, vest with long shirt or light jacket with leather pants or jeans, the cuts fitting his body and make him look like one of the millionaires of Storybrooke. He can always be found as well with a scarf around his neck.
Jefferson is really good at identifying magic. From working for a number of years with magic users, combined with the ability to see/sense magic, he is usually able to at least guess the purpose of the magic even if he has never seen it before. It's very likely that even if Rumple had not introduced him to the magic before, during his time working for him, that Jefferson had stole it at some point. His knowledge is not infallible and so he can very well be wrong. But the thief/messenger/portal jumper is not just a transporter with no knowledge.
He's very good at distraction and slight of hand. Part of it comes from being a thief for a number of years. Part of it is because he is so naturally straightforward that people can easily forget he's as crooked as they come. In any case it is a rare person who notice his intentions or his omissions. Which if fortunate because otherwise he would have been killed by at least one of the magic users he used to work with. He can't really hold it through extended contact with magic users if he likes them.
Well he used to be a thief. Some of this is slight of hand and magic tricks. Mostly it's lock picking, being aware of the guards and running like heck. It's also looking for the highest price, knowing when a deal sounds too good to be true and then hopefully sticking with the best deal. This has not always worked out for him as Wonderland shows.
Working as a hatter, and being poor, gave Jefferson more of an eye for clothes. When he was young he thought that dressing stylishly was a sign of wealth and it made him happy to at least wear well fitting clothes, so he knows how to make clothes fit along with stitch nice patterns into very fine clothes. Obviously his specialization is hats and he has a lot of short cuts for when he has to work on bad days. But his ability to make clothes was a skill that, when he became a mushroom seller, was even more necessary so Grace and himself could live happily in a safe place.
One does not survive as a thief for very long without the ability to run. He really does not have the stamina for long running but in short bursts he can run surprisingly fast. He is also pretty good at detecting when he's about to run into something though people can still trick him. It tends to be pretty hard on him and he's usually winded after running for a bit. Which is why he focuses on finding a hiding place or getting lost enough in a place he is familiar with.
It has it's weakness but it's a pretty useful niche power. He has to know where he is going without his hat to be able to teleport there. He also needs magic in a realm and energy enough for it. He can teleport objects to him but if he's in the same room, or trying to get an unknown object he doesn't know the location of, it's better to get it in person. Teleporting himself takes less energy and his hat takes no energy to use from himself at the cost of needing a ridiculous amount of magic to work. He's generally pretty good at knowing when is the best time to use teleportation and when's the best to run thanks to Rumple.
Being a Family man:
Might not seem that way but his very childishness that makes him worried that Grace'll hate him makes him very concerned about being the best father he can be to her. He changed around his very lifestyle and self for her. As long as he has someone else to be better for.... He will be the best self he can for them.
If he is interested in something or it's useful to him... He knows quite a bit about it. Sometimes it's random facts. Other times it's the proper dose of a poison to knock someone out without killing them. He can be a bit awkward to work with but he does love working and learning.
As his experience with being the pawn of schemes and the messenger increased... He became good at short term decisions. Giving Regina a moment to calm down on their first meeting before giving his pitch. Pretending he was injured to get Emma to bring him to his mansion. How he phrases things and appears. He's not helpless on his own.
Although Jefferson was crafty enough to leave most of the work to fellow orphans... This left an impact on his mind and body in a literal way along with a figurative way. This includes a natural tendency to be really nervous and irritable with people to the point of social phobia. He also is naturally pretty depressed.
On the more physical symptoms... When he is upset he gets tremors in his hands and he also doesn't sleep very much. It is the reason his physical strength is so low and he also aches at times which doesn't help with his irritability. These symptoms had been going down but are getting worse after the curse is broken.
If you bring up his family you will get an emotional reaction from him and that makes all the experience he has in being crafty go out the window. He would do anything for his family, has abandoned the work he loved so his daughter Grace would not lose her father too, and so it is very easy to tug him by that motivation. On the same line you can motivate him with money at the sort of risk Jefferson considers low. Family must be considered first if you try to manipulate him in such a way however.
Jefferson likes stealing because it gives him a lot of accomplishment and a rush that he normally doesn't have. He loves being able to run from guards and give priceless objects to the people who requested he get them. He loves hearing the schemes and being the gear that causes the wretch in schemes. Even if it's bad for him. Especially since it is very bad for his goals of keeping with his daughter and making sure she always has her father.
A love of sweets:
A very good way to bargain with him, and cause horrible havoc with his health, is feed him sweets. He very much has a sweet tooth and although he can refuse it, such as in the case of Regina's apple wine, his attitude can be sweetened with it. It is also a good indicator of his state since he often uses cooking sweets and eating them to make himself feel better. if he's doing a lot of that he's probably upset. Probably.
High energy needs:
Jefferson has a tendency to be very lethargic without a steady amount of food. He can live on orphan portions, and had, but it's definitely not the best for him. The sweets he so loves also are an easy way to regain fat when he uses his power. Because his power, not being regular magic, takes the toll from his body's sugar and fat. So if he over uses his magic he can faint and go into a coma. It's an excellent party trick to not get fat no matter how much he eats.
Jefferson gets bored very easily and this can make him rash. This can also make him terrifying, putting him obsessively to certain hobbies, sometimes good in the case of learning instruments and cartography during the curse, while other times.... He will do things like obsessively make hats, edit his clothes and watch over Grace. All ways of finding what little control he can in his life.
There had to be a disadvantage to being around magic users so much and this is it.... He's used to magic as a security blanket or as a tool. Although he can't use general magic, magic is often times his first resort to solving problems and he'll turn to any magic user he is travelling with. If he's with non magic users he'll be less dependent on a magic solution to his problem.... But it is a strong tendency of his.
Jefferson is one of the most stubborn people in existence. He hates not getting what he wants and he will stick with an idea to the bitter end. Often times... It is better to make him think that it's his own idea to change his mind rather than directly arguing against him. It is just less of a headache in the long run.
As much as he is good with tactics.... He's not as good with realizing the results of long term plans. If you want a short term plan he is pretty decent at them. But there was a reason he just sort of let Rumple decide the plans when he worked for him or his wife. He's not the one doing a twelve step plan that gets him what he wants. He's the man who has a six step plan that turns out mostly for the best except for one thing.
This is quite obviously an interest from profession. He is not so much attached to models and the fashions of the world without magic as formal fashion, clothes of noblemen and the rich. It's not a matter of blending in but more sticking out in a way that makes him have power and look like he isn't poor. But outside that, he wants people to have beautiful fabrics and poorly made mass produced clothing makes him sad.
Jefferson very much likes to make his own sweets. He knows it's not poison and serving it to people he likes pleases him. Plus he's like a humming bird and needs a lot of energy for his magic and general function. The sweets are the passion but he also learned, by necessity, how to cook. Mostly Shepard's pie and the cooking that is a bit like baking. He knows how to make stew and soups though.
I mentioned sweets earlier and he likes them equally to just fruit in general. Most fruit is sweet and it's only plentiful in certain months Apples may have complicated associations with him. But you can see him eating an orange or other fruit sometimes instead of pastry. Most of his fruit goes into his pastry though.
Not a hobby he picked up in the Enchanted Forest but if Jefferson went back, he'd keep it up. Cartography distracted him from how lonely his house was and made him feel less claustrophobic. Not to mention he likes exploring so it's a combination of two of his favorite hobbies. He's decent but not quite good because of his tremors.
He never had much in the way of material goods but the ones he picks out are meaningful to him. He tends to lean towards things that would last a while and seems like something that he'd really enjoy. But he's also very childish and has some questionable objects. This is not helped by the fact that if he wants something..... He picks the one he wants not the cheapest one.
He likes to some degree conveying knowledge... but his fun with lecturing people is more a sense of power . He'll do it if he is sure that he is right. Because having it turn on him is terrible. Unless they get into a good debate on it or give him a clearer knowledge.
He doesn't seem like the type but he is... Although he can't use most magic, magic objects he can use like everyone else, he enjoys learning about magic. He also tends to gather as much knowledge as he can, partially for self preservation, but also because as a kid his knowledge was very limited. It was his dream to experience and learn outside of the hatting workshop and now he does. So now that he is a good eighteen years removed from that, he's in the habit to learn.
Like most commoners, he is used to being treated as lesser by royalty and so he has a tendency to behave as though royalty will treat him that way. He hasn't dealt with enough royalty that are otherwise for him to change his view though he IS friends with Regina. Emma, naturally, doesn't count as royalty and Viktor doesn't count as nobility either.
He's also not fond of the trait of nobility. Though he can be elegant, the idea of a spiritual good that one must follow annoys the orphan for some reason.
He hates them. If he didn't need to eat them for health reasons, he wouldn't. Potatoes are exceptions to the rule. He tends to trick himself into eating them by adding them into shepard's pie or reminding himself that he's a father who has to eat vegetables in front of Grace. If people are intent on their food, at a group event, he might pick out quite a few vegetables. But other people's food, not food he made.
Loss of control:
He's used to being manipulated but he doesn't particularly like it. That's because in most cases he loses his control on the situation. Usually for the worse for him. Which is why his more frequent clients as a thief had been the type to manipulate in a way that was beneficial for him if it didn't hurt them. This could go wrong for him but it was less likely to.
He loves magic theory and he loves seeing magic done. As bitter as he can sometimes be about the fact his magic is so specialized.... He loves his magic and he loves watching magic users use magic. So when someone just calls magic users evil it makes him upset. Calling magic evil is worse. It's really more neutral. To Jefferson, there is no evil magic, only evil users.
He's not used to regular authority so scolding bores him. He knows he shouldn't have done it and he's already done it so there is no point in lecturing him. He listens more of it is a critique or a 'why this shouldn't happen again'. But otherwise he'd do a full turn and walk out of the room from someone he doesn't respect. Usually anyone other than Rumple.
He has a bit of low level claustrophobia. It's why his houses have a tendency to have a lot of space. He gets a lot more upset being stuck in a cell so he does his best to be good at not getting caught. Needless to say... The Queen of hearts did not help his fear.
The scar around his neck is a visible reminder of the torment of wonderland. Before he just hated Wonderland. Now the scar makes it a spectre he sees every time he looks in the mirror. The worst part is he is fairly certain neither Rumple or Viktor can't remove it. so he's resigned to having to get used to it.
icing on the cake .
worst fear: That his daughter will realize what a terrible person he is and hate him deepest secret: That he might not live a long time deepest desire: Besides his family back together again? He would love to be a general magic user. special skills: Lockpicking, thievery, clothing making, his teleportation magic, retaining a good amount of general knowledge and the ability to know both Regina and Rumple without either of them making him take a side.
overall personality .
Jefferson looks about as two faced and sketchy as they come. He behaves that way. But it's very easy to explain as just a symptom of his childishness and his tough upbringing. When he's irritable... He tries to close himself off and back up to do his tasks to distract himself. It keeps people from seeing that in reality he is a very anxious and depressed person. If people see that then he'll lose his power and he doesn't like that.
He prefers to keep control about what people see of his personality. When he's out of control, fear takes over, and when fear takes over he becomes rather unpredictable. It's when he is in this state that he becomes more rash and his improv is off. As long as he has at least some bit of control though, he can do quite fine thank to his training from Rumple. He can be smooth, suave and cheerful. This is how he can get so many friendly acquaintances and survive being the sort of messenger who interacts with normally short tempered witches.
Jefferson is only friends with very few people. He doesn't have much room for trust and even less for cultivating relationships when he's used to seeing everyone as disposable like himself. He has the potential for friendship with people who he can believe have no ill intent or resemble him in some way. That often jumps starts the interest that can lead to friendship. But with people who can die there is always this sense of distance.
With the exception of family. It is in connection to family that Jefferson's sensitivity can show up. He is very insecure and so, naturally, he needs to be built up by his family. He is nowhere near independent enough to be able to live without anyone. And family, along with his friends, are people he can believe the words of. He'll ask them advice or listen to their advice even with his stubborness. Because as much as he likes risk, likes being able to explore and be an adventurer, he would abandon all of that to be the stable person they need.
This puts him a little on the unpredictable side because he IS at war with himself. Between the side of himself that wants to be the adventurer having a fun life and living the high risk that makes him feel something. And the side of himself that wants stability, friendship and to be left alone by everyone else who he cannot be bothered to putting up an image of himself for. So he ers on the side of deciding for family first and then his friends with himself as the very last person he does things for.
He's very neurotic too. He likes to keep himself in order. everything is sorted, including his appearance, when he is more stable. When he is unstable.... Mess will start to appear. As well... His tendency to be impulsive, combined with a liking of things like magic which most people should avoid, tends to get him into trouble even when he's more stable. His secrecy just makes it worse because he often doesn't tell things he really should be telling people.

Jefferson doesn't know much about his parents, he was very young when he ended up an orphan. Sometimes he liked to imagine his parents were killed by bandits. Sometimes when he was having a bad day though, he'd think of his parents abandoning him to the hatting work shop. Though he knew that it was really more of the luck of the draw with orphans since they were easy manual labor without the price of having to care if they died.
Of course, he cared very much whether he died or not. After a bit he noticed that the orphans who were the hardest workers with the fabrics died faster. So he would get the other kids to do his work for him, as much as he could, without the Master Hatter realizing that he was slacking. He did this so well he was promoted to sewing hats, and then to being able to interact with the customers, mostly away from the death chamber that was the beginning hatting process. He could even become the master hatter's apprentice, since none of the master hatter's blood children were good for obvious reasons, except he hit a bit of a snag.
One day when he was making hats, daydreaming of travel from the stories he heard from his customers, he ended up making a hat. A very special hat. A hat he knew was his despite the fact none of the hats in the shop should be his. He knew he had magic, trying to get away a few times from teleporting outside, but this was different. In his panic he, and his hat, ended up in a place he had never been to and there he met the Dark One. At first he thought he was going to take his hat, since at a scrawny ten he had never dealt with an adult who would let him keep what was his, but he convinced him he just wanted to look at the hat. After looking at the hat, he offered Jefferson a deal and future employment, something which Jefferson accepted.
Over those years... Rumple was the closest thing to a father Jefferson had ever had. Not that he would ever say anything to the man. Affection was not easy for either of them, they both were a little too damaged, but when Jefferson got the apprentice name Taliesin he was happy. Jefferson had never been a special name, always something the Master Hatter called him when he had to specifically call him, so a name that was special to him and a relationship with the dark one most wouldn't get... Well he wasn't telling anyone...
He worked with a couple of people, including a man named William Colter who had a brother called Daniel, he finally met the queen. She was a lot more naive and less subtle then he expected for her reputation. Probably a lot more than Rumple expected as well. In any case, he heard about the situation with the dead lover and thought to offer the services of his friend from another world Viktor Frankenstein, acting the most sympathetic he could. He thought he did a pretty good job considering the whole thing was set up to fail in order to break Regina's spirit. He felt a little guilty about it as he became friends with her but there was never a good opportunity to tell her.
It would be later in his work that he would meet his wife Priscilla. They both were in Camelot planning to steal the king's treasures and, after escaping together, teamed up for a few more thieving adventures. They would fall in love, get married and soon after marrying find out they would have a child. It was a bliss neither of the teenagers expected and they tried to live straight during that time. But their funds dwindled four years after their daughter Grace was born and so Jefferson picked up his hat again. Priscilla protested and tried to convince him, after saying no to his plans to use the hat, that they would find another way. But Jefferson became impatient, the clock of Evermore that was held by the March Hare would sell for enough for them to live comfortably for a while if he got it and he knew from William that the March Hare had it, so he disregarded her wishes.
So he traveled to Wonderland and, being out of practice, got caught by the March Hare who currently owned it, forced into a never-ending tea party for who knows how long. Until his wife came to rescue him, the white rabbit being how she got there, which startled him to say the least. It was after they got his hat and were running that she would get hit by an arrow from the guards. Her last words to him, before he left, she made him promise to return to their daughter and not leave the then four year old Grace an orphan. And so he severed his connections with his former employers, with the exception of Rumple who he did continue writing to, hiding away in the woods as a mushroom seller so Grace wouldn't lose him too.
Unfortunately, after two years, Regina found him. She wanted him to go to Wonderland, with her, to get something. She offered the greatest of riches and he managed to turn it down.... until a white rabbit toy Grace wanted, but he couldn't get for her, convinced him otherwise. He warned her about the hat's rule that the same number of people who travel to a world have to travel back. After retrieving the object, Jefferson learns that Regina had gone to rescue her father, and so he became stranded in wonderland. He was taken before the queen of hearts where, after being beheaded, she tasks him with making another magic hat.
During those five years in Wonderland, all that kept him going was making hats, so he could return to his daughter, and his tea parties. He was tormented by the Queen of hearts every once in a while when she was bored and put in prison. He had many many more interactions with the March Hare as well. He would meet a girl named Alice who, even though she wasn't his daughter, he used a bit as a surrogate daughter and befriended. He'd also befriend the dormouse and had a working relationship with Will Scarlet. He would also have a bit of a relationship with a friend of the March Hare, who he was sure he was hallucinating looked like his wife, but they both were lonely and didn't mind.
His time in Wonderland was abruptly interrupted by the dark curse. For the first little while he didn't even recognize where he was, or process he was away from Wonderland, but on the third day he was able to figure out he was under a curse by Regina. Storybrooke's primary importer and exporter under the double memories that strained his mind. A man who lost his wife and daughter in a car crash... Even as he knew that his daughter was right next door to him living under a different name. He confirmed it when Regina visited the first time. He could explore the forest but he knew better then to interact with the townspeople. It would be too much with his double memory and besides, he hated people.
Twenty eight years until the curse broke and things started to change in Storybrooke. Sure Regina adopted a kid about eighteen years in and the kid, along with Regina, would cause people to act a little differently in their script. But it wasn't until Emma showed up in her little yellow bug that things started to really change. A girl started to visit him for tea times and he would try to keep this girl safe. He also had more freedom and the first thing he wanted was another hat. When Mary Margaret made a jail break, he kidnapped her to get to Emma, making Emma work on a hat for him. She didn't really believe him but she half completed a hat before she managed to convince him she was really working on it and use the opportunity to untie Mary Margaret.
It was fortunate that she had worked on that hat a little or he would have died when he was kicked out the window by a freed mary margaret. As it was... the hat only had enough energy for taking him in not taking him home with his daughter. A girl named Shea told him when he could leave his hat and he offered her a place with him that he planned on having be temporary which would season two wise turn more permanent.
In any case, he thought he would be stuck on the Grace situation, until Regina called him with a white rabbit card on Paige's bike. H showed up, just expecting her to betray him again, but instead they made a deal. He'd use his hat to allow her to get something from the enchanted forest and, in return, she would rewrite the story of the curse so the Jefferson of Storybrooke could live with Grace as his family sans the double memories.
They hit a bit of a snag where, even with all the magic objects she had were put in, it still wasn't enough. Fortunately.... Adding in the locket Regina had allowed them to be able to touch the other side and get a red apple. When he came for his payment though, Regina refused to pay, blaming the backfire on him. Upset, he would use a hospital uniform to get into the psyche ward and, after drugging the head nurse, take out Belle. He told her his name and gave specific instructions, planning for Rumple to get angry. He expected magic coming back so Rumple could curse Regina. He didn't expect the wraith that flipped over his car when he was buying toys for Grace.
It wasn't until the afternoon that someone rescued him. Unfortunately it was the current sheriff with his broken hat. In grief over his friend, and feeling the wraith was a sign his return to his daughter could never be, he was not in a very good state for Charming's ill choice of threat. Jefferson flipped the table and ran for it. Later in the day, Henry Mills found him in the stands looking at one of Grace's signs looking for him. After a bit of work he managed to convince Jefferson to try again and he succeeded in reuniting with his daughter.
When Jefferson had the time to discuss with Dr. Whale, who remembered his true identity now when he hadn't when Jefferson last negotiated, he would learn his wife was in the psyche ward. He couldn't believe it, he had to be shown it, but once he did he would take her home and they would be a family. As long as neither of them messed it up.
