PLAY BY: Raphael Sbarge
name: Archibald (Archie) Hopper/ Jiminy Cricket
age: Somewhere around 71
birthdate: October, 10th, 1902
kingdom of birth: Amare
species: Transformed Human
occupation: ( Advisor/Conscience ) Therapist
sexual orientation: Straight
powers: He can understand crickets and animals, though more on a feeling basis then on a clear meaning. He's been a little too careful to test how much he has in term of cricket based power but he is more durable then one would expect because he has to live long enough to fulfill the conditions of his life.
height/weight/body: Archie is 5'11 which tends to put him comfortably at one of the taller heights to the rest of storybrooke. He looks like he should weigh a normal weight but he's a little lighter then one would expect. Mostly because his clothes tend to be layered to such a degree it's hard to tell how much he weighs.
hair: Archie has red, curly hair he keeps a little long, male haircut wise. It's his natural hair color, a carrot sort of red, and he doesn't use hair product in it. It's healthy consistency makes the slight recede in his hairline less noticeable.
eyes: His eyes are ocean blue, in terms of being on the more dark end, though they can light up quite vibrantly with the rest of his face when he is happy. If he upset, then it can get quite, like a storm cloud covered the light normally in his eyes. Although he can still have recognizably blue eyes. His eyes are usually covered by his glasses but never obscured by them.
distinguishing features: He has a few scars from his youth, working in a caravan would do that, but gained more after season two. He also has signature red glasses. He has a lucky umbrella he keeps with him, rain or shine, that he sometimes leans on without his full weight.
style: although his personality is youthful, his style does not reflect that. It is fairly formal, with a lot of vests and jackets. He does wear jeans andkeep his coat unbuttoned unless it's winter.
Strong moral compass::
It had always been a talent of his... As Jiminy he always knew what he did with his parents was wrong. He didn't like hurting people and from there his morals branch out into a very strong system. He can be influenced, in a number of ways by a number of people, but it doesn't stop the voice in his heart making him feel miserable for betraying himself. He's happiest following his moral compass.
Archie had always been the type to be able to sit down and listen. As Jiminy he had not had an easy voice to listen to, having to have cricket translated to human by a Gramophone, so when he needed to speak he had to make his words count. This meant having to listen closely to the sides and situations. Even as Archie, he is very much an eavesdropper, he's someone who tries to get a feel of everything.
Jiminy/Archie is a very calm person with a very non confronting attitude as standard. Combine this with the positive attitude he tries to have and it makes him very soothing. It helps that he very much has a calm voice, to some degree deliberately made that way by talking slower and using pauses in his speech to think, so he doesn't upset people. He can still manage to upset people and, still being human, he can also get upset which might lead to yelling. But in general he's comforting.
Archie does not look it but he is a fairly quick thinker. He had to survive, as Jiminy, in unpleasant circumstances. When he is in danger he has pretty good instincts for getting out of it. Mostly... This strength of his only really works in life or death situations, or situations involving other people, as much as he had wished he had been able to leave his parents on his own initiative. It took time for him to act.
Archie might have been lacking a spine during the curse, something Jiminy had, but behind the weak will is a lot of courage. He's not a fighter, so he might seem like a coward when he has to retreat, but he often times acts when other people need him. There is more to courage, and heroics, then typical heroic acts. He might not be able to fight dragons... But go into a unstable mine to save Henry or stand up to Regina for his patients? He can do that.
Good judge of situation:
Pretty much connected to the quick thinker part. He can't judge a situation that is his own personal situation, though he will very much reflect on whether it is terrible or not without much action on his part, but he can judge someone else's situation. It's one of the reasons he is such a good psychiatrist. Even when he was under the curse as Archie... He could see that Henry was just an imaginative boy and Regina was trying to keep a hold of him.
Archie kept this as a secret but the life of being the town's soul, while not being able to do anything to help them, had a huge impact on his cursed self. Combined with a past that was unpleasant... He turned to drink. It took off the edge and as long as he only did it after hours he could excuse it as fine.
After the curse broke, he realized it was an issue, but he had more problems remembering being Jiminy Cricket then before. To some degree... He was fulfilled realizing he had a purpose and was doing it. But he was a little bitter about how little control he had of his life... And so he is trying to take control by dealing with this demon but it is difficult.
When Jiminy caused Geppetto's parents to be turned into dolls... He wanted to atone for the act. Blue gave him that with a life under another form that he chose with conditions that would allow him to live as long as Geppetto needed him to. He knows Marco needs him, and Pinocchio now August as well, but it is still a trigger over his head. Knowing someday that condition will be up and he will die.
Some days he can accept this, and it's why he can talk about conditions with magic, but other days he can be brought into despair thinking too much about it.
Archie cannot help himself. He wants to be of help to everyone so he has a tendency to butt into a situation. Even when he shouldn't.... When he should let someone deal with it on their own. It has led to quite a bit of anger. But if he hears a situation he has to try to speak up what is best for them. Sometimes right, sometimes wrong.
Not a fighter:
He hangs around with a lot of heroes so this is a problem. He's often times a liability in a fight. One on one trying to handle other people he can turn around a situation. But a full fledged fight... He really doesn't know how to fight. He doesn't have the strength or training. A seasoned fighter can very much win against him.
Black and White thinking:
The problem with having a strong moral code and interactions with beings, fairies, that don't have an acceptance of grey. He tends to very strongly put people in hero/villain or right/wrong in situations. He tries to counter it, he believes anyone can make up for their situation and combat their dark side, but he does have his bias. If someone he likes is doing something bad, he'll try to protest, but he's more likely to be upset but still find them a good person despite it.
Meanwhile... It's hard for him to see the person in the villain. The Dark One is a menacing character and he blamed him for the longest time for his choice but then realized as he heard more deals that the situation was much more nuanced. And interactions with Regina the mayor has made her more of a person then he had ever known her as when he was Jiminy.
He feels immensily guilty about his past. Both his past working with his parents and what he had done to Geppetto's parents. It is what drives him. It is also what weighs him down. He thinks himself a bad person for what he has done and it makes him take risks to make sure to help others. Problem is... He will also blame himself if things go wrong for people he helped.
As a small boy, Jiminy always liked crickets, he found their song rich and clear. To him... The sound of crickets indicated summer. But they also indicated a sort of freedom that he lacked. Now that he is free from his parents, he still likes to listen to the crickets, since they will always be a bonding point between him and his friend Marco. They remind him of what he wants to be and tries to be.
The forest reminds Archie of the Enchanted forest although he didn't really know it before the curse broke. Even now, though he likes the town, he will wander a bit out of the way to see it. He never really enters it though... He liked the enchanted forest but of all the people in Storybrooke... He actually is one of the few who wouldn't mind not going home.
Walking with Pongo:
He loves being able to have an excuse to stretch his legs and see the day. Pongo, as a dalmatian, needs a lot of exercise and so Archie always has to make time so Pongo can walk. He makes sure to always cheerfully greet people he meets on the walk and it is always great to see the joy his dog has from interacting with their friends. He may not interact with everyone in town on a daily basis. But the walk is as much as check up on others as a reminder of how beautiful a day it's going to be.
Imagination saved his life when he was younger... His soul would have died staying with his parents the way he had if he couldn't dream. The fact that humans could dream, could imagine, something better for themselves is a trait Archie loves. It's why he bonded so easily with Henry.
Being the good guy:
He feels better following his moral compass then not doing so. Giving money rather than taking money. Making sure that people are happy. It's pretty simple. He does his best to not be a villain.
Animals have a sort of freedom that Archie wishes for. Most of them have a straightforwardness, as well as ability to run, that Jiminy had envied. Grown up... He tends to be a bit of a kindred spirit with such straightforward emotional beings. They usually like him as much as he likes them. And he's not afraid of them.
More classical sound but he loves cheerful music. He'll usually stop and listen to it. He sees it as a bonding point between people and it usually is. His favorite music is always going to be crickets chirping though. Just for his association with his friend and his freedom.
His friends are his life. A lot of Archie's life is a small world of order and the small pleasures. His family was not made up of good people and he was always travelling. So having stable friends who can be his family means the world to him in his long life. Specially since he doesn't have any family anymore other than his friends.
He gets a lot of joy from knowing he did a good thing. He doesn't even have to be repaid. Little by little... Helping people makes him feel like he is making up for his past. So as long as people are willing to have him help then he is always willing to help. Always willing to offer too because he's nosy.
Freedom is a big concept in his mind. He always felt trapped, stuck with his parents, they may have had all the love in the world for him but the him they crafted. He was never sure that they really cared for the him that wanted to make his own way. As much as he doesn't always have choice... He wants to make sure he, and others, have as much choice as they can have.
Not being heard:
Sometimes, during Storybrooke and back when he was with his parents, it felt like he could be talking to a wall for all the good it would do. It is a very helpless feeling for people to not listen to you. For someone who likes helping... Having someone not heed his advice hurts him very much. Then he tends to blame himself.
He hates his past. Absolutely loathes the sort of person he was to be willing to hurt his parents rather than run away. Be the sort of person to steal rather than stand by his morals. To some degree... He understands that he couldn't have known. That he did his best. But he never really convinces himself.
Being forced to do something against his nature:
Lying, stealing and all manner of other things makes him feel sick. It's not something that he considers himself doing. It's something that he connects to the self his parents wanted to make him. It is even worse when someone makes him do them and he immensily dislikes it... Because they are behaving exactly like his parents, thinking he has to obey them to do something wrong, and he will show anger at it.
Regina as Madam Mayor:
To put it lightly, Archie found Regina a bully. During the curse, he was half personally scared of her and half mad at how she treated Henry. Her intimidation tactics did not help matters. When the curse broke he saw the person behind the mayor and he likes her a lot better. But he really didn't much like her then.
This is not hate... He was one of those poor people who had to answer to Mr. Gold for rent. So he tends to have an aversion reaction. Then after the curse broke... He remembered a whole number of things and now things are complicated. But he doesn't always like his actions.
Archie's at his best when he is surrounded by people. When he is alone... He has to think of his past. He has a tendency to have a hard time to tell himself everything is alright. Sometimes he is not lonely when he is alone. Most of the time he is and even Pongo can't help. That's why he makes sure to still go out and connect to people.
Archie does not enjoy pain. Most people don't but he tries to avoid it. His parents were not abusive, at least in terms of physically, but he still is afraid of being hurt. A lot of being a thief was the constant threat of punishment. And he had been caught before.
Jiminy did not like villains. They chose to be bad, to hurt people, and that was enough to put them in his bad category. As Archie, he dislikes villains still on default. But he has had a bit of a paradigm shift as to whether to permanently judge them. He doesn't have any sympathy for villains who are not willing to try to change themselves. For those who do he is willing to listen.
No if ands or buts about it. He hates hurting others. It is a lot of what influences how he is now. Archie used to find his thieving fun as Jiminy until he realized it wasn't just a game but taking other people's livelihood. The fact he has hurt people because of his cowardice is why he tries not to anymore.
icing on the cake .
worst fear: Becoming like his parents because his parents were awful people.
deepest secret: He resents to some degree having his lifespan attached to his utility to his friend and feels a little deceived by Blue.
deepest desire: To be a good person and always free to be.
special skills: Pick Pocketing and he can play music
overall personality .
Archie Hopper does his best to be a good man. As Jiminy Cricket, in the Enchanted Forest, he was a moral compass for the heroes and always felt that he did not entirely fit in the role. Influenced by the Blue Fairy and these insecurities, he tended to be a great deal harsher then one would expect. When the curse made Jiminy Cricket into Archie Hopper, he became insecure and shy, easy to manipulate by Regina Mills to serve her ends as a part of the control mechanisms of Storybrooke. This bothered him with his strong moral compass so he turned to drinking.
It was only after the curse broke that Archie was able to get back his true strength that he had only channeled briefly thanks to Emma. He now works to help everyone he can in town and is one of the most steady presences in Storybrooke. Unlike most of the people in Storybrooke he goes by his cursed name rather than his Enchanted Forest name. Because he finds the Archie he is now, who has learned who Regina is, is the better start.
But he is still deeply insecure. He wants to forget about the past that he was reminded of during the curse, his bad points as Jiminy and Archie, as well as work on his future as someone he can be proud of. He's not sure if he will be able to. He often can get pretty depressed about it, especially since he has a limited time to still make up for it, but he wants to try. He owes it to the town and to Geppetto to be the best he can.
family ties .
residence: Storybrooke, Maine, House
mother: Myrna, Deceased, Human, Mother
father: Martin, Deceased, Human, Father
other important relatives:
Archie was born with a different name to two puppeteer and con artist parents, raised to steal. They would always tell him it was helping and that he was always meant to do the work with his parents. But Archie had a strong conscience and felt guilty for the work as he got older. He tried his best to convince them into stopping but it never seemed to work. One time when setting up he met a boy and listened to grasshoppers chirp.
After a talk with this boy, he is convinced into doing something and he goes to the dark one to earn money to leave his parents. Rumplestilitskin, however, realizes something of the motive and offers a potion that could get rid of Archie's parents. Desperate and unaware of the costs of magic, he accepts the potion from Rumple. He waits until evening, when his parents were scheming and getting a young couple to give all their goods for a "cure" for a plague, to use the potion. But he learns his potion was switched with the false cure and when he rushes back, the young couple had become puppets.
Not only that but Gepetto, the boy who Archie had met earlier, had returned home to the sight. Wanting redemption, Archie wishes for the blue fairy and ends up becoming a cricket to lead Gepettothrough tough times. Years later, the mentor was called on to help with Snow, who had become cold from a forgetfulness potion. She was not listening to most of his words except for him inadvertently giving her the idea of killing the Evil Queen. He did manage to save the day by chewing through Charming's ropes, which Snow had tied around him to prevent him from stopping her, and allowing Charming to save the day.
He also was at the war council where he advises Snow to consider killing the Evil Queen, his thoughts pretty black and white on villains, with the rest of the war council agreeing with him. It is Snow's decision to stop the execution. As Gepetto's lifelong companion, Archie had to help raise Pinocchio, and he often was the target of pranks due to his small size. After a particular incident with a cuckoo clock, the blue fairy comes in, requesting Gepetto make a wardrobe. This wardrobe would be able to transport two people and Gepetto requested that Pinocchio be sent through as one of the two. Although Archie tried to mention it was unwise, Gepetto used the fact Archie had turned his parents into puppets to silence him, so at the exchange of the idea at a war council... Jiminy stayed quiet after being interrupted with the idea of the wardrobe. After Gepetto continues with the deal even though Blue wants to cancel it, Archie wishes Pinocchio a farewell.
Under the curse, Archie becomes the town psychologist and every morning takes Pongo on walks. Not being biased towards anyone, he met most of the town during the day in good mornings. His charge, Gepetto, became his friend Marco. With neglectful and abusive parents in his Storybrooke background, he was very much an advocate for children being treated right but also very easy to shut down by domineering people. One day he is called in to advise Regina and although he is nervous, afraid of her, he ends up helping her through deciding to adopt Henry. He also helps her not be fearful of the boy's birth mother coming into the woodwork. As Henry gets older, Archie becomes his therapist, though he personally thought it was just a healthy imagination he conceded to the wishes because he saw Henry was lonely and wanted to help him.
Henry skips out of therapy one day and that is when Emma comes into town. The next day the clock begins to work. This becomes a large problem, specially when the mine collapses with Henry getting the dangerous idea there was something in the mine, and Regina threatens him to dissuade Henry from his view or else Archie would lose his job. This stresses Archie. He doesn't cancel his lunch with Marco until late, says harsh words to Henry during their session to try to convince the boy away from the mine and afterwards ends up drinking.
When Henry goes missing however, Archie knows exactly where Henry went, he goes to the mines and ends up trapped when going in to rescue Henry. They find an old elevator and try to go to the top but Regina's well intentioned use of explosives causes them to be trapped. Archie apologies to Henry and admits his view. In turn, Henry helps him realize he could still be the man he wants to be. Emma rescues them in time and Archie uses the threat of a future custody battle to be able to stay Henry's therapist. Later that day he was witness to Emma apologizing to Henry for calling him crazy.
When a new Sheriff needs to be chosen he announces both candidates and is also a primary supporter of Emma after she rescued Regina from an office fire. Emma wins due to her honesty. He assists David Nolen in finding memories through a hypnosis session but David leaves before telling Archie anything. He also advises Mr. Gold on an issue before the first curse breaks. He assists in stopping Dr. Whale from leading a mob to hurt Regina. He offers Regina a listening ear but is turned away on the day and is at the town hall meeting where Regina takes Henry. His patient words having not convinced her at all, he was one of those who wanted to cross the town line, but was convinced out of it.
Regina comes to him for therapy and Dr. Whale breaks in to ask to be sent back to his world. He needed to be sternly commanded out by Archie and when the conversation leads to a discussion on Regina letting go of the past, which was Daniel's body, she decides to leave. She does return later in the day for a session. At Emma and Snow's safe return, Archie requests Regina is invited because she made great progress but it leads to Regina getting upset at him. This results in him letting in Cora and being taken to be interrogated. He holds information under torture until the very brink where he mentions Belle and is left alone. He is able to be freed by Belle and heads to Snow's apartment to tell everyone he is alright.
Archie is one of those gathered in the diner during the trigger event and helps convince Emma to try the plan that would save everyone. Storybrooke is saved and everyone celebrates til they learn of the next adventure. He learns of Belle's task and talks to her about her fears of Mr. Gold dying. In the end, with Peter Pan setting off another curse, he has to comfort a heartbroken Belle and get returned to the enchanted forest. He's one of the people in the forest with Regina's group and when he is returned in the second curse one of the first to doubt her after Leroy suggests she may have cast the dark curse again. After the second curse, while Snow is having baby Neal, Archie talks with Henry about the future and at Regina's urging hides with Henry in the closet when Zelena breaks Emma's protection spell.
