Ever since this Storybrooke curse was broken, Emma had been trying to wrap her head around all of it being true. Not just the curse, but, all the fairytales she'd grown up reading about. They were all around her, and, most of them were connected to her family.
Her family, that was another thing entirely. They were here with her, but, they also weren't at the same time. All she knew was that she had parents, of some kind, and, a son who needed her.
Which reminded her back to the man she'd 'met' if that was the right word. If met means, a crazy man kidnapping her and Mary Margaret, and, holding them against their will, until she could get in tune with a power she didn't even know she had, just to go back to a land she didn't know was real.
That man had seemed to just want to take his daughter home, which she understood since she wanted to do the same thing with Henry. But, in the lead up to all of it, he'd just seemed mad in the head. Maybe he actually was the Mad Hatter.
All Emma knew was that she owed the man an apology, the man was asking for help to find his daughter, and, she had just refused to believe him. If someone had told her that her son wasn't hers, then she'd do anything necessary to get them to believe or help.
Leaving the apartment which she shared with her parents, Emma hopped in her car, and, soon tried to remember where his house was. There had been certain things she had been able to get into her memory when it came to remembering locations. Especially if she felt she may need to find them again later on.
Emma soon stopped outside the house, and, just leant back in her seat for a moment. Was she really voluntarily going back in there? Apparently she was, since she'd driven all the way up here to do so.
Stepping outside of the car, Emma leant against it before making her way to the front door. It felt weird to be back here voluntarily. Especially after how things had ended last time. She had made him think that she believed, before knocking him out and getting him kicked out of a window.
It was too late to turn back now though. Emma would have to see this through, besides she was one to admit when she was wrong or owed someone an apology. Even if she was stubborn, alot of the time. Emma gently knocked on the door, and, waited to see if the man was inside.

It was a bit of an eerily quiet day. No wind and it was a bit cloudy on the edge of town. The sort of weather that would speak of ominous things to a superstitious person. To a person like Jefferson, it just meant that he wasn't going to be getting any sort of migraine along with his pain today... Which Jefferson was very grateful about. Since he had many problems already today, these past few months, that he wouldn't want to have compounded by having a bad headache that made him wish for death. Since he had to take care of his house and take care of his business.
The benefit to living outside of town is the fact that no one expects Jefferson Hatter to be on a regular time table. If they did, they weren't going to get him anytime soon, since besides homeschooling his daughters he was really not in a good state to interact with people. Part of it was physical issues, he ached, which made him want to lay down and go back to sleep if he could find a way to go back to sleep with his insomnia. He had some minor tremors today, though the fact they were only minor was a relief, because it was hard to play off that everything was fine when he couldn't cook with his adoptive daughter Shea.
The other part of it was a certain guest to Storybrooke. He had been trying to hide her from his wife, he wasn't sure how well he was succeeding at it, but he knew the Queen of hearts was back in town and it did not put him in a good state. The last time he had dealt with the queen of hearts had been when she was still in Wonderland. She had cut off his head on their first meeting and liked to torment him. He really did not have fond memories and madness was on the edge of his mind even as he did his best to give pleasant smiles. He would go to Archie but he didn't need to have the man give any details to Regina. Specially since hopefully Regina didn't know about his retaliation.
He arranged for Viktor to come see him... It was the only reason why he even considered coming to the door and looking out at the knock. Unfortunately, a bad day made worse, it was not someone who he expected to show up at his door. Last time he had dealt with Emma personally.... He had held her and Mary Margaret prisoner. He could only hope that was the reason that she was here. She couldn't exactly punish him for that since she had also been secretively trying to return a murder suspect to her cell so that way she wouldn't have to be charged with escaping jail. Neither of them had been on the moral right there.
But also because he had done other things with his time that was questionable. Caused Henry's sleeping curse sleep indirectly, he got the apple, though he was sure that Regina wasn't going to reveal him for that. Break into the mental asylum to release Belle from Regina's clutches while Henry was on his death bed... That was something that she could definitely arrest him for. Because breaking out a mental asylum patient was against the law still and it was also part of what instigated the wraith. So if she back tracked that... She would definitely have reason to arrest him when his children most needed him to protect them. When the queen of hearts was on the prowl in Storybrooke.
But he didn't know why Emma was here. So he'd have to be cautious. He cracked open the door a little, hoping that it wasn't Cora disguised as Emma, though he kept the dead bolt on so she couldn't just storm her way in. His blue eyes were dark in his caution and suspicion as he looked down a little on her. "What do you want?" He asked, trying to keep his voice calm but his irritation that disguised his worry clear. "Are you here to arrest me? Because if you are then this is a bad time." He would rather not be taken away from his kids.
Glancing around, Emma wasn't sure whether Jefferson would want to see her, heck she was almost positive he wouldn't be. But, as Sheriff, and, the person she was Emma owed it to herself to fix her mistakes.
Of course, if she knew the story of Alice in Wonderland right, there was probably one person he was hiding from in this town. Cora, also known as the Queen of Hearts. This wasn't about that at all, but, Emma was sure that it wasn't helping Jefferson's state of mind when it came to things in this town.
Emma sighed softly as she started to back away from the door, since it may mean that Jefferson either wasn't here, or wasn't coming to the door. She would understand if he didn't, but, Emma just wanted to make things right with the man. Emma was about to head back to her car, when she heard a stirring inside.
Hearing the door start to unlock, Emma glanced back to the door as she waited for it to open. She adjusted her ponytail as she placed her hands in her jacket pockets before seeing the man Jefferson standing beside the door. "Look, I get you're mad at me. If I was in your situation, I'd be mad too" Emma said, sighing softly as she continued to glance at the man. "I'm not here for that. Not for anything like that."
Emma knew this was going to be hard, but, she'd come too far not too try. "I um..." Emma said, with a slight pause as she glanced down and kicked the air with her foot, before looking up at him again. "I wanted to say I was sorry."

Jefferson just eyed the blonde haired woman in front of him, him hidden by the door while she stood there with her hands in her red leather jacket's pocket, marveling at how she could react so normally to him. He had held her captive. Threatened her with her own gun. She was just back from the Enchanted Forest that she had gotten stuck in thanks to travelling through his hat. And she was commenting how he was mad at her... Which wasn't really her getting the point of why he was acting the way he was and he liked her so...
He interrupted her comment about him being angry with a stern. "I'm not angry." He then clarified. "Not about anything like that." He used the words back at her so she knew he was referring to the incident. He couldn't blame her for any of her actions during that. Her friend was being held captive by someone who was acting crazy and pointing a gun at them. He was being impatient and if he had been willing to wait then none of his actions would have been necessary. Of course... He couldn't blame himself either. He knew he couldn't do anything else.
Still... It was strange getting an apology from her for her behavior. He blinked at her apology, once and then twice, before he could put together the words he should say. He took a deep breath and spoke on the breath. "Apology accepted." He commented and eyed the door for a moment, having almost on default wanted to close it, before stopping himself while his face was still in view. He then unlocked the door and opened it a little bit more. "Would you like to come in for tea? Or maybe coffee... It won't be any trouble."
He wanted to close the door on her... But he owed her a little bit. She wasn't like Regina, she hadn't really earned any trouble from him, so there was that. She was also not her father, he liked her, so he was willing to talk. Plus Priscilla wasn't home, she should be home but he knew as much as she did that she couldn't stay stuck in the house all the time, so he let her sneak out rather than confront her about it. His kids wouldn't really cause trouble in this situation. So as long as Emma wasn't required anytime soon and didn't mind coming in... Well... He had the door open for her and he'd be a good host.
Emma just stood there looking at Jefferson, if that was actually his name, with her hands in her jacket pocket. She knew that she should probably act a bit different around him, since he'd held her hostage with her own gun and then been the owner of the hat that took her back to the Forest, but, for some reason she wasn't. She just wanted to make up for her own mistake and all the trouble she caused in the process.
Emma raised her eyebrows as he said he wasn't mad. "You're not?" Emma asked, kind of confused, but, looking down at her feet for a moment before glancing up at Jefferson. "Well, that's good I guess." Emma had just wanted to save her friend, well, her mother from a seemingly crazy mad-man obsessed with hats who used her own gun to make her focus on a hat to make it work. She hadn't believed it of course, but, at the same time that man just needed to wait a bit. But, she didn't blame him, he'd been desperate to get back to his daughter, and, take her home.
She knew it may be surprising, but, Emma meant her apology, it just felt like it was needed, even if he didn't think so. Emma couldn't help but smile as he said her apology was accepted, "Good, that's settled then." Emma said, with a small chuckle. Emma wasn't surprised that he seemed to stare at the door wanting to close, but, was surprised when he actually opened it more. She was even more surprised at his invitation. "Well, the last time I took something from you, I ended up drugged on your couch."
At the same time, she felt like it probably wouldn't happen again this time. She wasn't exactly in a hurry to be anywhere, Henry was at school, and, then was at Regina's. And her father could handle the Sheriff things for a while. Besides it seemed like he would actually be a good guy, and, he did actually seem like a nice guy when they'd first met. "If you can promise it won't happen this time. I guess I could stay for a bit." Emma said, smiling softly as she looked at Jefferson.

Emma seemed a little startled by the idea he could not be upset at her and since he was in the mood to explain at least a little he would. After his nod at her 'that's good I guess' he took a breath. "I'm not so removed from reality as to not get that holding someone hostage to make another person do something is not the best way of getting it done." He commented matter of fact. "In your position I probably would have hit my captor with their own telescope too... " His head had been ringing quite a bit after he woke up from that. It hadn't helped.
But he had definitely done much more unforgivable things in a life threatening situation. Was he a murderer? He was fairly certain not. Room for error he might have accidentally killed people. Brutal maiming and otherwise were the consequence of trying to chase him in most booby trapped castles. He wasn't really a fighter but he wasn't particularly helpless either. And he was ruthless. He had to be. He knew how easy it was for someone used to killing to try to kill you. He knew how little worth there was in a human life.
But he was fond of Emma and when she smiled at his acceptance of her apology, he smiled back. It was almost a polite sort of thing except there was a little more warmth. "I guess it does settle that matter." He commented simply before he went into his dilemma as to whether to close the door on her or not. As tempting as it was to follow his natural instinct... He didn't have that many friends and it wouldn't hurt him to have one who actually interacted with the heroes in town. Rumple and Regina didn't count.
He wouldn't have blamed her if she had said no. As she said, he had drugged her last time he invited her in. But she said yes and his polite smile turned into a bright grin that was nearly impossible to see normally. A baring of teeth was a sort of half friendly half defensive shield for Jefferson. Overly cheerful people make people uncomfortable and off kilter. So he could seem like he was trying too hard to be friendly when he really did want them there as short as possible. Real smiles were reserved for family and those he really really liked.
"Excellent! Come in come in!" He said, holding open the door. "And as a one time offer for this visit... I will be as honest as I possibly can barring the occasional omission. Because you did come to apologize and the number of people who have apologized to me could be counted on one hand." The fun of being lower class and working with villains... Apologies were unexpected and always meaningful. Which means you basically never heard them unless you were really close and they really messed up with you. Sometimes, even when you should hear it, it's unspoken.
Sorry I disappeared for a while! Anastasia is officially done and I am back, had some IRL mishaps but hope to write with all of you guys soon <3.
