Flynn has a contradicting personality and can't help but flop back and forth at times. He is a strong and caring individual, who honestly just wants a place in the world and wants to put his mark on it so he won't just be forgotten in history. Though he's a thief, he wishes to do good and just wants people to be proud of what he's doing. Unfortunately, doing good rarely gets him a full stomach or a place to sleep for the night, leaving him with the unfortunate task of stealing from just about everyone he comes across. Flynn always looks on the bright side and tries to not take everything. Only enough that can help him get by. Though even that oath to himself gets lost in thought sometimes, as he chose to steal a particular crown in a kingdom not that far away.
As a young boy he had always heard of the tales of Flynnigan Rider, a rich and daring swashbuckler who had many thrilling adventures no matter where he found himself. Eugene Fitzherbert ceased to exist at a young age, springing forth his alter ego Flynn Rider, someone young Eugene always found himself day dreaming about. He was sure that he would grow up and be just like him. He was an orphan and like most orphans, he had a very active imagination of a life that was different than the one he was forced to live.
Years later, he got out of the orphanage and his alter ego stuck for good. Though instead of helping those in need, he constantly found himself only looking out for himself. Stealing from everyone and anything that would give him a good amount of coin in his pocket. He never did become the swashbuckler that he always dreamed of becoming, but he tried as best as he could to get as close to the picture of the hero he once worshiped. He found himself constantly at war with himself, unsure of where he was truly going with his life. During one of his low points where he was really fighting himself, he found a man named Robin Hood who took him into his group of merry men. They lived in the forest and were amazing. He would watch Robin steal from the rich and give it to those in need and help those in the village. It was exactly what he wanted to do. Flynn would try to copy, but something always seemed to go wrong when he was out on his own. He constantly found himself fighting against his ego and need to keep all the gold for himself. There were several times when he would tell Robin that he failed to steal the object he was supposed to focus on, but would just keep it for himself. He was greedy and he couldn't shake it.
After a few years, he fell away from the merry men. It seemed all, but perfect. Flynn couldn't take it though. He wanted a bed to sleep in, he wanted things to work out for himself and lost sight of what was really going on with Robin's men. Flynn cared not for the people of the village when he was forced to sleep on the ground and eat barely anything. He wanted huge feasts, parties, and ladies.
The first mission he went on after running away from the merry men, he found himself working with two other thieves, and their boon was the crown of the lost princess of Corona. They were able to make their way off with it, but not without alerting the guards. Flynn ran and not only was able to get away from the guards, but was also able to trick the other thieves away leaving the crown all for himself. He fled into a nearby clearing where he discovered a tall tower. He scaled it's walls and scurried into the window at the very top where he was immediately hit with a frying pan. When he came to, he was tied to a chair by what looked like...hair. The girl that now stood in front of him was named Rapunzel and she desperately wanted to go to see the lanterns that they set out in honor of the lost princess. He agrees to take her to them in exchange for the satchel that held the crown inside, that she had conveniently taken from him and hid.
The two set out on an adventure to the palace to make her dream come true, but they went through many trials and felt themselves grow. Flynn eventually couldn't help but feel drawn to her. There was just something about her, something in her eyes that let him know that he was supposed to be there with her. The two eventually made it through to the palace and they watched the lanterns and it was then that Flynn new for sure that he was in love with her. In the boat, Rapunzel gave him the satchel and told him that she was no longer afraid that he would leave her and he knew there was no way that he was going to.
After the lanterns, he docked the boat after he saw the two thieves that helped him steal the crown. In trying to show an act of love, he gave them the crown, but it had been a trap. The two didn't want the crown anymore and would have rather had Rapunzel, the girl with the magic hair. They attacked Flynn and knocked him out, tying him and the crown to a boat and sending him straight towards the guards, where he was arrested. He awoke in a frenzy. Rapunzel was in danger and he had to get to her.
